Candidate for presidency was detained on June 18 along with his son Eduard, heading to the СEC to submit signatures. The detention was carried out by the Financial Investigation Department of the State Control Committee. The whole day lawyers were not allowed to visit the detainees: "maneuvers" were held in the building of the Pension Fund of Russia. On the same day, Viktor Babariko was put in the KGB pre-trial detention center.
It became known the day before that Viktor Babariko's account, where the electoral fund is located, was blocked.
On June 21, Viktor Babariko was charged under Part 2 of Art. 243 ("Evasion of paying taxes and fees, infliction of damage at an especially large scale") Part 2 of Art. 235 ("Legalization of funds obtained by criminal means, committed repeatedly, either by an official using his official powers, or on an especially large scale"), as well as under Part 2 of Art. 431 ("Multiple or large-scale bribery").
Viktor Babariko "categorically disagrees with the charges," and his defenders insist "on his complete innocence".
Later, the charge under Part 2 of Art. 431 ("Receiving a bribe repeatedly or at a large scale") was requalified in Part 3 of Art. 430 ("Taking a bribe at an especially large scale by an organized group or a person in a position of power").
